Volunteer Opportunities

Direct Service

Direct-service volunteer positions involve advocating for survivors of domestic violence or their children. These positions require extensive training, offered by Dawn twice each year, and are often among the most rewarding. Some of these positions are competitive and not everyone who applies will be selected to engage in direct-service work. Examples of direct-service volunteer opportunities include:

  • Answering DAWN’s Advocacy and Support Line
  • Facilitating survivor support groups
  • Legal Advocacy & Court Accompaniment
  • Children’s programming
  • Working with survivors in DAWN’s housing programs

Internships are available to students or those looking to complete hours towards a certificate or license. Internships are created on an individual basis and are tailored to meet the needs of the individual and the agency. Internships typically consist of a combination of direct service work and some administrative work. Interns interested in direct service are required to complete Dawn’s Advocacy training. These hours can count towards one’s internship hours if appropriate.

Please contact us if you are interested in an undergraduate internship.

Administration and Events

Administration and Events volunteer positions support the agency at a staff or program level without requiring direct advocacy with survivors of domestic violence; they generally do not require any special training and can be short-term or long-term commitments. Examples of indirect-service volunteer opportunities include:

  • Office assistance and reception
  • Fundraising or event support
  • PR and communications
  • Board and committee membership
  • Shelter Beautification Crew
